Rewatch Dune 1 and 2 before Dune 3: running times, recap and what to remember
More than 5 hours of movies to catch up on before December 18? Here's how long each Dune runs, what you absolutely need to remember, and how to plan your catch-up.
Dune: Part Three opens on December 18, 2026. If you want to fully enjoy Denis Villeneuve's conclusion, rewatching the first two movies is almost essential: the universe is dense, there are lots of names and the politics matter.
How much time do you need?
- Dune (2021): 2h35
- Dune: Part Two (2024): 2h46
That's a little over 5h20 in total. Two evenings, or one well-organized Sunday.
What to remember from Dune (2021)
- The planet Arrakis is the only source of spice, the most precious resource in the universe.
- House Atreides is given Arrakis by the Emperor… and it's a trap set with the Harkonnens.
- Paul Atreides and his mother Jessica survive and find refuge with the Fremen, the people of the desert.
What to remember from Dune: Part Two (2024)
- Paul earns the Fremen's trust and grows closer to Chani.
- Some of the Fremen see him as the messiah foretold by a prophecy, which worries him as much as it serves him.
- Paul ends up seizing power and unleashes a holy war. Chani, for her part, rejects what he's becoming.
That last point is key: the third movie, based on Dune Messiah, focuses on the consequences of that rise to power.
No time to rewatch everything?
If you only have one evening, rewatch Part Two. It recaps the essentials of the first movie and leaves you exactly where the sequel begins.
