East of Eden on Netflix: the Florence Pugh limited series
East of Eden, Netflix's 7-episode Steinbeck adaptation starring Florence Pugh. Story, runtime, whether to read the book and similar shows.
Among this autumn's big releases, one is meant to be savoured rather than devoured: East of Eden, a Netflix limited series streaming since October 1, 2026. Seven episodes, a cast led by Florence Pugh, and John Steinbeck's most ambitious novel.
What is East of Eden about?
It's a multi-generational family saga set in California's Salinas Valley, from the late 19th century to World War I. Two families, the Trasks and the Hamiltons, and one question running through it all: are we doomed to repeat our parents' sins, or free to choose?
At its heart is an unforgettable character: Cathy Ames, one of American literature's most disturbing figures, played by Florence Pugh.
A detail film lovers will enjoy: every episode was written by Zoe Kazan, granddaughter of Elia Kazan, who directed the 1955 classic with James Dean.
How long does it take to watch?
7 episodes, roughly 7 hours. It's a limited series: a beginning and an end, no cliffhanger leaving you waiting for season 2. Tip: one or two episodes a night, it's a show that benefits from breathing room.
Do you need to read the book or see the film?
No. The series adapts the whole novel, whereas the 1955 film only covered its final part. If you love the show, the book makes a great winter read.
Who is it for?
- Fans of Little Fires Everywhere, Normal People or sweeping family sagas.
- Anyone looking for a prestige series to watch as a couple.
- Not ideal if you want action or thriller pacing.
