Spider-Man, Nolan, Pixar, Mario, Michael Jackson… Here's the ranking of the top-grossing movies of 2026 worldwide, and what it says about the year.
2026 will go down as a very big year for movie theaters. Here's the worldwide top 10 by box office, based on figures compiled by Quartz in mid-October. The ranking may still change before year's end, with the big December releases.
The worldwide top 10 (mid-October 2026)
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day: about $2.51 billion
- The Odyssey: about $1.77 billion
- Toy Story 5: about $1.15 billion
- Michael: about $1.02 billion
- The Super Mario Galaxy Movie: about $1.01 billion
- The Devil Wears Prada 2: about $693 million
- Project Hail Mary: about $684 million
- Pegasus 3: about $641 million
- Minions & Monsters: about $526 million
- Obsession: about $520 million
What this ranking tells us
- Sequels still dominate, but not only: The Odyssey and Project Hail Mary prove that a great original or book-based movie can still draw crowds.
- Animation remains a safe bet: Pixar, Nintendo and Illumination place three movies in the top 10.
- The music biopic works: Michael, about Michael Jackson, tops a billion.
And in December?
With Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday expected on December 18, the top of the chart could still change before December 31.
