Carrie on Prime Video: is Mike Flanagan's series worth it?

Mike Flanagan's Carrie, based on Stephen King, has been on Prime Video since October 7: 8 episodes. What's new, runtime and horror shows to watch next.

Just in time for Halloween, Carrie has been streaming on Prime Video since October 7, 2026. Eight episodes, all released at once, from Mike Flanagan, TV's master of horror. It is the first series adaptation of Stephen King's debut novel.

What is it about?

Carrie White grew up shut away at home under her intensely protective, deeply religious mother, Margaret. After her father's sudden death, she is thrown into public high school. Flanagan moves the story into the social media age: viral bullying, everyday cruelty, constant pressure… and telekinetic powers that wake up alongside her rage.

  • Carrie: Summer H. Howell
  • Margaret White: Samantha Sloyan, a Flanagan regular (Midnight Mass)
  • Also starring Matthew Lillard (Scream) and Amber Midthunder

Flanagan wrote the show and directed four of the eight episodes. He invited high school students into the writers' room so the situations would ring true.

How is it different from the 1976 film?

Brian De Palma's film with Sissy Spacek turns 50 this year. The series doesn't remake it shot for shot: the longer format makes room for the novel's supporting characters, and the team promises surprises even for people who know the ending.

How long does it take to watch?

Eight episodes of roughly an hour: plan for 7 to 8 hours. Perfect for a Halloween weekend. If you only have one evening, start with the first two, which set up the whole world.

Other Mike Flanagan series to catch up on (Netflix)

  1. The Haunting of Hill House: a family haunted in every sense. His masterpiece.
  2. Midnight Mass: an island, a priest and some very unsettling miracles.
  3. The Haunting of Bly Manor: more melancholic, with a beautiful love story.
  4. The Fall of the House of Usher: Edgar Allan Poe meets a pharma dynasty.
