Harry Potter TV series: release date, cast and where to watch
HBO's Harry Potter series is slated for December 25, 2026 on HBO Max. Release date, cast, number of seasons and where to stream the films meanwhile.
It's probably the most anticipated series of the decade. HBO's Harry Potter series is slated for December 25, 2026 on HBO Max. Here's everything we know and how to get ready.
When and where to watch the Harry Potter series?
- Announced date: December 25, 2026. It isn't final in every country yet, and some listing sites still show 2027.
- Platform: HBO Max. Big HBO shows usually stream on HBO Max in Europe at the same time as the US, or the next morning.
Beware of scams: no episode has aired yet. Sites offering "the Harry Potter series streaming" are traps.
The cast
- Dominic McLaughlin: Harry Potter
- Arabella Stanton: Hermione Granger
- Alastair Stout: Ron Weasley
- John Lithgow: Albus Dumbledore
- Janet McTeer: Minerva McGonagall
- Paapa Essiedu: Severus Snape
- Nick Frost: Rubeus Hagrid
How many seasons?
The plan: one season per book, so seven seasons over about ten years. Season 1 adapts Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. HBO already greenlit season 2 in May 2026, before the first even aired.
Rewatch the films first
All eight films are on HBO Max. How long will it take?
| Film | Runtime |
|---|---|
| Philosopher's Stone | 2h32 |
| Chamber of Secrets | 2h41 |
| Prisoner of Azkaban | 2h22 |
| Goblet of Fire | 2h37 |
| Order of the Phoenix | 2h18 |
| Half-Blood Prince | 2h33 |
| Deathly Hallows Part 1 | 2h26 |
| Deathly Hallows Part 2 | 2h10 |
Total: about 19h40. No time? Just rewatch the first film: it's the one season 1 adapts, so you can compare.
Why a series when the films exist?
The films had to cut a lot: supporting characters, subplots, daily life at Hogwarts. A full season per book makes room for all of that. It's also what worries fans: the ending is a long way off.
