The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, everything to know before November 18
Release date, story, place in the saga and the order to watch the Hunger Games movies, with running times to plan your marathon.
The Hunger Games saga returns to theaters in France on November 18, 2026 with Sunrise on the Reaping, directed by Francis Lawrence, who already made four movies in the franchise. It's one of the most anticipated releases of the end of the year.
What is it about?
The movie adapts Suzanne Collins's novel published in 2025. It goes back in time to the 50th Hunger Games, a special edition (a "Quarter Quell") in which twice as many tributes are sent into the arena. At the heart of the story is a young Haymitch Abernathy, whom fans know as Katniss's jaded mentor in the first movies.
In other words, it's a prequel that sheds light on a cult character, set between The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and the first Hunger Games.
What order should you watch the saga in?
Release order (recommended for a first watch)
- The Hunger Games (2012, 2h22)
- Catching Fire (2013, 2h26)
- Mockingjay – Part 1 (2014, 2h03)
- Mockingjay – Part 2 (2015, 2h17)
- The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023, 2h37)
Chronological order (for fans)
- The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes: the 10th Hunger Games, young Snow.
- Sunrise on the Reaping: the 50th Hunger Games, Haymitch's story.
- Then the four movies with Katniss.
No time to rewatch everything?
The full saga runs close to 12 hours. If you have to choose, rewatch The Hunger Games and Catching Fire: they set up Haymitch, Panem and how the Games work, and the Quarter Quell in Catching Fire directly echoes the new movie.
See you in theaters on November 18.
