Oscars 2027: the frontrunners, and where to watch the films before the ceremony
The Odyssey, Dune Part Three, Project Hail Mary… The films cited as frontrunners for the 2027 Best Picture Oscar, and how to see them before the ceremony.
Awards season is starting. The 2027 Oscars nominations will be announced in early 2027, ahead of a ceremony expected in spring. But predictions are already in full swing. Here are the films most cited for the Best Picture Oscar, based on predictions published by the US trade press in October 2026.
The two big frontrunners
The Odyssey, by Christopher Nolan
At the top of many predictions. Nolan already triumphed with Oppenheimer at the 2024 Oscars. His Homer adaptation combines massive box-office success with artistic ambition, a mix the Academy likes.
Dune: Part Three, by Denis Villeneuve
The first two movies were nominated for Best Picture and won in the technical categories. The third, opening December 18, is expected to conclude a major trilogy.
The other contenders mentioned
- Project Hail Mary, by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller
- Wild Horse Nine, by Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin)
- Artificial, by Luca Guadagnino
- The Debut, by Jesse Eisenberg
- Elsinore, by Simon Stone
- The Invite, by Olivia Wilde
- La bola negra, by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi
- Primetime, by Lance Oppenheim
How to see the films before the ceremony
Some films are already out and will arrive on digital in the coming months. Others won't open in many countries until early 2027, often just before or after the nominations. The simplest approach: follow their arrival in theaters and then on streaming, week by week. We'll update this article with the official nominations.
