Stargate Returns: A Full Reboot on Prime Video Led by WandaVision Creator
The cult Stargate franchise is set to return on Prime Video under the guidance of Jac Schaeffer with an ambitious reboot project.
Nearly thirty years after the launch of Stargate SG-1, the iconic science-fiction franchise is preparing for a major television comeback. Amazon MGM Studios is currently developing a brand-new series for Prime Video, handing the reins to creator Jac Schaeffer.
Known for her acclaimed work on WandaVision and Agatha All Along, the American screenwriter will tackle the massive challenge of reimagining this beloved universe. She will be joined by producers Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell. At this stage, no release schedule or casting details have been revealed.
A Bold Approach Inspired by Battlestar Galactica
According to reports from Variety and Screen Rant, this new iteration could follow the path taken when Battlestar Galactica was rebooted in the 2003 era. Under Ronald D. Moore, that reboot traded traditional space-adventure tropes for a much darker, grittier, and politically charged tone, establishing a new benchmark for television sci-fi.
Amazon is reportedly considering a comparable strategy for Stargate: a reinvention designed to be welcoming to new viewers without requiring prior knowledge of the franchise's history. While this approach broadens the appeal, it may also spark intense discussions among longtime fans devoted to Roland Emmerich's original 1994 film starring Kurt Russell and James Spader, as well as the legendary television runs of Stargate SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe.
A Previous Project Scrapped by Amazon
This new creative direction follows an earlier attempt by the streaming platform. In November 2025, development began on a series overseen by Martin Gero, a veteran writer from Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe. That initial concept was designed to tie closely into the existing continuity and potentially feature legacy characters.
Ultimately, that project was scrapped in June 2026. Industry sources indicated that Amazon worried a continuation too closely linked to older lore might struggle to attract a fresh audience. By bringing in Jac Schaeffer, the studio is pivoting toward a completely fresh start.
