The Hunchback, Soul of Paris: Vincent Cassel plays Quasimodo on Netflix
Netflix revisits Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre-Dame in a dark version, with Vincent Cassel as Quasimodo. What we know about the film announced for November 27.
It's the French curiosity of the month on Netflix: The Hunchback, Soul of Paris, a dark reimagining of Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, with Vincent Cassel as Quasimodo. The film is announced for November 27, 2026 on the platform's schedule.
A story that never ages
Published in 1831, Notre-Dame de Paris tells of Quasimodo, the cathedral's deformed bell-ringer, and his impossible love for Esmeralda, a young woman rejected by society. The novel has been adapted countless times: the 1956 film with Gina Lollobrigida and Anthony Quinn, Disney's 1996 animated movie and, of course, the French musical that a whole generation sang along to.
Why this version is intriguing
Netflix presents the film as a dark reinterpretation of the story. So we're moving away from Disney's family version and back toward the darkness of the novel, which is much crueler than people often remember.
And then there's Vincent Cassel. Used to intense, physical roles (La Haine, Mesrine, Black Swan), he has what it takes to give Quasimodo a presence that goes beyond makeup.
A powerful symbol after the restoration
The film arrives shortly after the reopening of the cathedral, restored after the 2019 fire. A coincidence that gives this story, in which Notre-Dame is almost a character, a special resonance.
To watch first
To get in the mood, Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) is a safe family pick. And for the bravest, the novel, of course.
