Ascension on Apple TV: Director Alfonso Cuarón Recruits a Cinema Legend for His First Horror Series
Alfonso Cuarón is preparing Ascension, his first horror series for Apple TV, starring Caitríona Balfe and the legendary Bill Nighy.
When an Oscar-winning and wildly eclectic filmmaker dives into horror, the streaming world stops to listen. Alfonso Cuarón, the visionary behind masterpieces like Gravity, Children of Men, Roma, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, is gearing up for his very first horror series titled Ascension.
A Long-Awaited Project for Apple TV+
In development for several years, this original creation marks a fresh collaboration between the Mexican director and Apple TV+, following his psychological miniseries Disclaimer starring Cate Blanchett. Adapted from Adam Nevill's novel Last Days, Ascension promises to be a deeply unsettling psychological horror thriller.
The plot follows Rose, a driven documentarian and newly divorced mother. Skilled at exposing other people's truths while living in deep denial of her own, she begins investigating a mysterious 20th-century cult known as the Ascension Church. She finds unexpected refuge in their teachings before unearthing terrifying secrets.
A Stellar Cast Featuring Bill Nighy and Caitríona Balfe
On the writing front, Alfonso Cuarón reunites with his brother Carlos Cuarón, with whom he previously worked on Y tu mamá también. However, it is the casting announcements that are truly turning heads. Alongside Caitríona Balfe, the beloved star of Outlander who takes on the lead role, production has just added a true British cinema legend.
The brilliant Bill Nighy—unforgettable in Love Actually, Shaun of the Dead, and as the iconic Davy Jones in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise—has joined the project in a currently undisclosed role, promising an extraordinary layer of prestige to this dark cult thriller.
A Long Wait Until 2028
Since preproduction has only just begun, horror fans will need plenty of patience. Ascension is not expected to premiere on Apple TV+ until early 2028 at the earliest, as the platform's late 2027 slot is already claimed by the second season of Pluribus. A distant release window that gives the master filmmaker ample time to craft a truly unforgettable nightmare.
